England captain Owen Farrell has shifted his technique to get on the right side of World Rugby’s clampdown on dangerous play at the World Cup, which starts on Friday.
On two occasions in fall 2018 Farrell escaped penalty for that which appeared to be no-arms tackles.
“Owen is not overly focused on that field [handling ],” said England defence coach John Mitchell.
“But he has made some adjustments based on past autumn.”
Mitchell added:”John Carrington, our strength and conditioning coach, is also my support defence and he is very good at working on tackle technique.
“There may be mitigating conditions, but when your hands are facing the shoulder you have got a better prospect of creating a suitable wrap tackle.
“If your shoulder is ahead of your hands, then the legislation doesn’t care for you very well.”
World Rugby issued directives at the end of last season and is currently trying to rid the sport of contact.
There have been 13 players shipped to the sin bin and also four dismissed, along with England coach Eddie Jones is worried that there might be a flurry of cards at the first months of the championship in Japan.
“It is at the back of everybody’s mind and there is some apprehension around it,” supported Mitchell.
“You are just going to have to deal with anything that happens.
“You’d like to believe that since [the World Junior Championship] there has been learninglittle bit more common sense, and you do listen to the phrases’mitigating circumstances’.”
England start their effort against Tonga in Sapporo on 22 September and are in Pool C at Japan.
