England captain Owen Farrell has changed his technique to get in the World Cup, which starts on Friday on the perfect side of the clampdown on play of World Rugby.
On two occasions at autumn 2018 Farrell escaped penalty for that which seemed to be no-arms tackles.
“Owen is not too focused on that area [handling ],” explained England defence coach John Mitchell.
“But he’s made some alterations based on past fall.”
Mitchell added:”John Carrington, our strength and conditioning coach, can be my service on defence and he is very good at working on tackle procedure.
“There could be mitigating circumstances, however if your hands are in front of your shoulder you’ve got a better prospect of creating a suitable wrapping handle.
“If your knee is forward of your palms, then the legislation does not care for you really well.”
World Rugby is trying to rid the sport of contact and issued new directives in the end of last year about exactly what constitutes a legitimate speech.
There have been 13 players and four discounted, and England coach Eddie Jones is worried that there might be some flurry of cards at the first months of the tournament in Japan.
“It is in the back of everybody’s mind and there is some apprehension about it,” confirmed Mitchell.
“You are only going to have to deal with whatever happens.
“You’d love to think that since then [the World Junior Championship] there’s been learninglittle bit more common sense, and you really will hear the phrases’mitigating circumstances’.”
England begin their campaign against Tonga in Sapporo on 22 and are in Pool C in Japan.
