Ashley Giles states he will direct the bidding to regain The Ashes in Australia at 2021-2022 and has given his backing to England captain Joe Root.
England have won only one away series under the captaincy of Root – a 3-0 sweep at Sri Lanka in 2018 – and so were unable to prise that the Ashes since the string ended 2-2.
Root stated after the Ashes he was determined to continue as skipper and Giles, the management director of mens cricket of England, sees no motive.
Talking on the Sky Cricket Podcast, which you can hear at the participant below or by downloading , Giles explained:We believe Joe is your man for the task.
Theres a great deal of pressure and everyones circumstances can change but he has a large amount of qualities. He is our very best player and we back him acquire them and to take us.
Its great hearing him speak about that. We have to win at the distance between now and then but its a target.
Its much better to have that goal farther down the point – we can then map back from there rather than approach every Test somewhat aimlessly.
England prioritised cricket after their dismal showing in the 2015 World Cup and have been rewarded as they pipped New Zealand to win the 2019 variation last summer.
Giles says white-ball cricket remains important with T20 World Cups in 2020 and 2021 but declared theres a now a larger emphasis on Tests as England look to win the Ashes and also perform strongly in the inaugural World Test Championship, which runs between 2019 and 2021.
When asked by Ian Ward if Englands World Cup bid suppressed their outcomes in Test cricket, Giles said:I believe it did a tiny bit but we needed to do it, undoubtedly.
Today were moving into a new era. That doesnt mean were currently throwing everything .
We arent taking our eyes away white-ball cricket, in which T20 will take priority with just two T20 World Cups at the following two years, however we do need to provide Test cricket some more focus.
The World Test Championship provides it a bit more story and Joe, [head coach] Chris Silverwood and Ive spoken about the Ashes coming up in the next few years.

We need to make the most of each Test match and check that were doing the proper things and make sure were improving.

Silverwood stepped from bowling coach to head coach after Trevor Bayliss departure in Giles and September clarified the reason why the prior Essex supremo – that headed the Chelmsford side in 2017 into the County Championship title – had been chosen.
He has some excellent qualities as a coach, Giles said of Silverwood, who beat off competition from the likes of prior India and South Africa trainer Gary Kirsten to land the job.
I think what he did Essex as head coach in a brief space of time remains evident now from the heritage he left [with them also winning the County Championship at 2019].
His understanding of the system and his connections with the people within the group, particularly Root and Eoin Morgan, was quite important also. I think we have got a excellent man.
