Sergio Garcia made a bogey-free beginning to the KLM Open to get within two shots of the early lead to Amsterdam.
The Masters winner posted four birdies in a 68 at The International to sit at the group on four under and two strokes straight from first-round leader Callum Shinkwin.
Garcia, looking to combine the likes of Jose Maria Olazabal and Seve Ballesteros since winners of the event, began on the back nine opened to hitting the turn in 34.
Even the European Tour winner holed a 30-footer in the par-four initially and rolled to close the gap to post a six-under 66 and top the leaderboard.
“Requirements got a tiny bit trickier within the last six or seven holes, so I was quite satisfied with that,” Garcia explained. “I will keep working hard like I’ve been doing and hopefully I will have a chance this weekend”
126th at the Race to Dubai, shinkwin, reached the turn in 32 courtesy of three birdies, a eagle and one dropped shot.
English trio Chris Paisley, Sam Horsfield and Matthew Southgate sit a shot off the rate on five below along with Scotland’s Marc Warren, Denmark’s Nicolai Hojgaard along with Malaysia’s Gavin Green, together with one time leader James Morrison from the team two off the rate with Garcia.
Defending champion Wu Ashun is really about three under alongside home favorite Joost Luiten, who recovered from being three-over-par in the turn while Patrick Reed submitted a level-par 72.
